Ilioinguinal Neurectomy

The ilioinguinal nerve travels through the internal inguinal ring with the spermatic cord [Gray1973].  The nerve is often a source for chronic pain after groin surgery [Mui2006] [Dittrick2004].

Since the main objective in these athletes is to return them to their sport pain- free, strong consideration needs to be given to cutting the ilioinguinal nerve during groin reconstruction.  This results in an area of numbness along the medial aspect of the scrotum and along the upper medial thigh that resolves with time. Routine neurectomy of the ilioinguinal nerve has yielded excellent results in athletes [Zieren2007].
