Learn More About Sports Hernias
I believe that the term “Sports Hernia” is a misnomer. The term hernia implies a full thickness tear of the abdominal wall muscles. This allows the abdominal contents to slide out through the defect and create a bulge under the skin. But these patients usually present with at least part of the inguinal floor intact. Thus there is no bulge. The term hernia also suggests that the problem is limited to the abdominal wall, but these patients often present with a spectrum of problems that involve the oblique muscles, the symphysis pubis, and the adductor muscles.
The term “Sports Hernia” may not be perfect, but it is the term that everyone uses. My philosophy is to not become too focused on one area but to care for the whole patient.
